We offer many elective courses during the senior year to best serve each student’s individual needs and goals. Students with well-defined career goals and those who are still in the process of choosing a specific area to focus on have a wide assortment of electives to choose from. Most courses are two or four weeks in duration.

Students are also encouraged to approach faculty members for the development of unique courses.

Course Name: Newborn Nursery

Course Description: This 2 week elective will be in the AMC newborn nursery. The student will learn to diagnose and manage a wide variety of newborn medical conditions and learn how to decide when a patient needs a higher level of care. Under the direct supervision of a pediatrician, the student will function at an equivalent level to the interns on their newborn nursery rotation, taking primary responsibility for a panel of patients. The student will hone newborn physical exam skills and their understanding of normal and abnormal findings. She will also get experience counseling parents about common topics such as newborn care, infant safety, circumcision care, breast- feeding, nutritional issues, immunizations, and infant safety. The student will also assist with new patient admissions and present lectures to third year medical students on topics related to newborn medicine.
Educational Objectives: 1. Complete steps of a newborn exam and recognize normal and abnormal findings 2. Counsel parents on newborn care 3. Understand pathophysiology of newborn disease 4. Understand management of newborn disease 5. Lecture third year medical studetns on pediatric/newborn topics
Types of Patients: Stable newborns in the term nursery
